I attended yesterday's the Kihei Community Association's monthly meeting, and I was part of a group discussing sustainable projects for Kihei.

Not surprisingly, everybody in the group thought that building a new four-lane road in the middle of Kihei is not necessary. Instead, everybody agreed that a bicycle-pedestrian path would be a much better option for  the area known as the "North-South Collector."

Some said that they don't bike in Kihei because it's very dangerous. Many said that they are taking their kids to the new "Whale Trail" at Kalama Park, where it's safe for little children to learn to ride their bikes, with no driveways and no cars going by.

I just received the following press release from the Kihei Community Association:


The Maui Parks Dept will be having a blessing for the new Pedestrian Trail at Kalama Park on Tuesday June 9, at 10:00 AM. We also will be blessing the two new coral reef interpretive signs that KCA ordered and installed for the Park.

Kimokeo Kapahulehua and his Halau will conduct the blessing. Mayor Tavares will address the attendees, and President Jon Miller will thank the donors who sponsored the reef signs. Refreshments will be served by the General Contractor for the pathway, Kiki Ting and David P. Ting and Sons.


The Pedestrian Trail is a great addition to Kalama Park: Now young children can learn to ride a bike in a sidewalk with no driveways while enjoying a nice ocean breeze.
